SUNDAY SIT DOWN WITH
MEGAN CROSBY

This week, I had a little chat with lovely Megan Crosby, the incredible creative mind behind the brand “By Megan Crosby.” Megan is the queen of made to order, positive and colourful clothing – her brand has seen incredible success over the last year, and god does she deserve it! Megan chatted to me all about her work life and her inspiration – I hope you’ll love it!

TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOURSELF AND YOUR LOVELY BUSINESS!

So, I’m Megan, I’m 22 and I am the one-girl-band behind By Megan Crosby. I graduated from BA Hons in Fashion Design at the Arts University Bournemouth in 2018 and couldn’t decide where to go in my career. I tried my hand at being a stylist for a while, and whilst pursuing that, I was looking for sustainable brands that were actually colourful, fun and interesting (that weren’t like £££££). If you’ve ever seen my brand…. I’m not a minimal person, haha! So the existing market wasn’t for me, so, I decided to start my own brand. I now run a made-to-order whimsical fashion brand for girls who want to shop with positive impact 💓🌈✨

WHO/WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START YOUR OWN BUSINESS?

I ran a festival fashion brand when I was 14-17 (which was called Shop Genoa) and it really blew up on Instagram (pre-alogirthm days), so running a biz has always felt like it was in my bones from such a young age. I had a bit of a knack for it, so from that experience, when the opportunity to start a real brand post graduation came to me, I thought I’d go for it. To be honest, there was never a person or moment that made me think “I want to run my own biz” I’ve just sort of followed my gut and gone with it! But when I was trying my hand at being a stylist, I really was looking for sustainable fashion that could make a positive difference to the world, I saw a gap in the market and I went for it.

YOUR COLLECTIONS ARE AMAZING! WHAT HELPED YOU TO DEVELOP YOUR OWN STYLE?

Going with my gut and what makes me feel good. When I first launched the brand in May 2019 my aesthetic was very, very different. I was making things I thought were ‘cool’, but I was in a different place in my life and I suppose the brand has grown with me over the last year to get to where it should be now. I now make sure I am making things that bring me joy and that I love. Not because I think other people will think they’re ‘cool’. I really study my customer and what I think will serve her best too.

TALK US THROUGH YOUR TYPICAL WORKING DAY:

I get up around 8, get dressed, come downstairs to the home studio and get cracking. I usually check my to-do list, cut out some orders, sew some orders, work on next season, marketing, socials… it totally depends on what I’ve got going on on any given day!

WHAT DOES YOUR PERFECT DAY OFF LOOK LIKE?

PUB. At the moment I am dying for the pub garden in the sunshine…..But I guess that’s just cos we’re in lock down….(maybe?!)! My perfect day off would probably be a lay in with sunshine coming through my shutters, go out for avacado brunch & coffee., then go to Southsea Common (which is a massive common near me – basically a massive field by the beach) and sunbathe, drink fruit ciders with friends…. go get more some more food, haha. Then probably go to the pub hahaha….

DO YOU WATCH OR LISTEN TO ANYTHING WHILE YOU WORK?

I loooooove the High Low with Pandora Sykes & Dolly Alderton. I always listen to that (they’ve just come back from a mat leave and have released a bunch of super long eps, so I’m in my element!) I also love Audible & listening to books as I never find time to read, even though I love to.  I also listen to all sorts of music… I have some very varied playlists. From the Beatles, to Taylor Swift, to Fleetwood Mac to The 1975…. there’s a lot of random stuff in there but I love a good sing along.

WHAT DOES SUSTAINABLE FASHION/ DESIGN MEAN TO YOU?

It means making gorgeous pieces from responsibly sourced materials that are going to last a long time. Things that are made to be cherished & loved by their owners because they know the bloody hard work that goes into them!

WHERE DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN FIVE YEARS TIME?

God, who can say! Hopefully still doing what I’m doing, just keep growing! I’d love to have a small team 💗

I hope you loved my little sit down with Megan!
